Lovers handkerchiefs are one of the most old traditions in the north of Portugal. From generation to generation, the deepest feelings were written and then embroidered in precious handkerchiefs. Much more than a simple piece of fabric, they are the most pure essence of love between two people.
So when I was asked to do some decorations for a very special wedding that had Lovers Handkerchiefs as the theme, I was only sorry that there was little time left. I loved the result of the pieces I made and how they blended with the rest of the decorations. The photos are not great but because today is the 3rd of October and that I could have never done this without the help of a very dear friend that has her birthday today, here are the images for posterity!
Each table was represented by a different symbol of the lovers handkerchiefs that was then repeated in the napkin rings placed at each seat.
A ementa * The menu
The menus were printed in a special fabric and then sewn over a printed fabric with the traditional symbols of the handkerchiefs.
Algumas das argolas * Some of the napkin rings
My sewing machine was indispensable to sew the 200 napkin rings, 30 menus and other treats more! Maybe this way we can preserve some of Portugal's most beautiful traditions!
