São Francisco ::: San Francisco

Peço desculpa pelo atraso deste post mas o meu computador parece estar a querer depedir-se para uma reforma antecipada! Por isso e sem mais demoras, deixem-me apresentar-lhes São Francisco.

I apologize for the delay of this post but my computer seems to be saying farewell to an anticipated retirement. So, without further ado, let me introduce you to San Francisco.

Desde o momento que aterrei que fiquei apaixonada pela cidade, a começar pelo seu lindísimo aeroporto. Depois foi uma sucessão de surpresas. Em cada canto da cidade e já para não falar dos conhecidos eléctricos e edifícios, encontramos uma loja, uma galeria, uma tea house que nos deixa sem respirar. Foi o que me aconteceu quando entrei no Crown and Crumpet. Os detalhes da decoração, dos pratos, dos artigos à venda, enfim de tudo um pouco, foi realmente uma maravilhosa surpresa.

From the moment I landed I fell in love with the city, beginning at its beautiful airport. Then it was a succession of surprises. In each corner of the city not to mention its traditional trams and buildings, you can find a store, a gallery, a tea house that leaves you breathless. And that happened when I went into Crown and Crumpet. The details of the decoration, the china wear, the items at the shop, well everything really, was a wonderful surprise.

Mas há muito mais na famosa Ghirardelli Square para além do Crown and Crumpet: a própria loja Ghirardelli, com a sua  famosa chocolataria, a Lola, uma encantadora gift shop e outros mais. Na montra de uma galeria encontrei este prato de cerâmica e não resisti. É uma fantástica frase!

But at the famous Ghirardelli square there is much more than Crown and Crumpet: the chocolate store from Ghirardelli, Lola, a charming gift shop and many more. At the window of a gallery I found this ceramic plate and just could not resist. It's a fantastic sentence!

Os contrastes e diferenças arquitectónicas na cidade são notórias. Ao chegarmos a Japan Town ficamos com a sensação de termos entrado num país diferente, a começar nos edifícios e a acabar nas árvores e arbustos.

The architectural differences and contrasts in the city are notorious. When you reach Japan Town, you get the feeling you have entered a different country, starting in the buildings and ending at the trees and bushes.

A renovação inteligente de mercados tradicionais sempre me fascinou e adoro ver os espaços transformados em elegantes e modernos espaços comerciais que apesar da transformação não perderam a sua identidade. E o Ferry building é um deles. Da padaria à loja especialista em azeite ou cogumelos, a terminar na famosa Miette, todo o espaço é extraordinário.

The intelligent renovation of traditional market places has always fascinated me and I love to see the spaces transformed into elegant and modern commercial venues that in spite their transformation, still maintain their identity. And the Ferry Building is no exception to this. From the bakery to the stall specialized in Mushrooms or Olive oil, ending at the famous Miette, the entire space is extraordinary.

Adorei andar nos famosos eléctricos que sobem e descem as ruas da cidade e assistir ao seu fantástico funcionamento.

I loved riding the electric cable cars that go up and down the streets of the city and watching how they work.

Mas a maior surpresa desta cidade está escondida em China Town e se nunca visitou a fábrica das Fortune cookies de São Francisco, então não sabe que perdeu a mais deliciosa, charmosa e encantadora parte da visita!
Na minha mala e para além de várias compras, papéis e souvenirs, trouxe os famosos pennies esmagados com imagens da cidade e muitas, muitas recordações. Se um dia puder, hei-de voltar a São Francisco!

But the biggest surprise of this city is hidden in China Town and if you have never visited the Fortune Cookies factory of San Francisco, then you don't know that you have missed the most delicious, charming and delightful part of this visit!
In my bag and besides several purchases, papers and souvenirs, I brought the famous crunched pennies with images of the city and many, many other memories. If I can, one day I will go back to San Francisco!

A Quilter's heaven....

Na minha recente viagem aos EUA, passei uns dias em Salt Lake City. Um dos propósitos dessa visita era aprender algumas técnicas de quiting num delicioso lugar chamado Quilters Haven. E para qualquer amante ou até mesmo curioso nestas andanças da agulha e linha, este local é um verdadeiro céu! A Joni, a dona da loja (à direita na imagem) é uma verdadeira simpatia e poço de conhecimento! E nós, as alunas não podíamos ter aproveitado mais!

In my recent trip to USA I spent a couple of days in Salt lake City. One of the purposes of my visit was to learn some quilting techniques in a most delicious store called Quilters Haven. And for any lover or even mere interested in the art of the needle and thread, this place is a real heaven. Joni, the store owner (on the right at the photo) is really nice and also a well of knowledge! And we, the students, were really eager to learn!

Eu, a Tiffani e  a Rosália tínhamos já combinado que o pagamento da aula seria feito em géneros, por isso levamos de Portugal algumas caixas de cartão forradas a tecido e claro está, tecidos tradicionais Portugueses como as nossas fabulosas Chitas e ainda alguns retalhos de chintz com já alguma patine!

Me, Tiffani and Rosalia had agreed with Joni that the payment for the class would be made in products, so we brought from Portugal some handcrafted card boxes covered with fabric and, of course, some Portuguese traditional fabric like our fabulous Chitas and some pieces of chintz with a vintage touch!

Já é a minha segunda visita a esta loja e sempre que entro lembro-me dos filmes em que de repente se solta uma criança numa loja de doces e ela devora tudo. Como a entendo! Também eu me apetecia trazer cada pedacinho de tecido já quiltado, transformado em lindíssimos quilts que cobrem todas as paredes da imensa loja.

This was my second visit to this shop and every time I go in I remember those movies where all of the sudden a child is set loose in a candy shop and she eats everything. How I understand her! I wished I could bring every bit of quilted fabric, transformed in gorgeous quilts that cover the walls of the store.

O trabalho é verdadeiramente único, colorido ou em tons pastel, formando blocos idênticos ou não, quiltado com formas geométricas ou não.

The work is truly amazing and unique, colouful or in pastel shades, forming even blocks or not, quilted in geometrical shapes or not.

Esta manta foi a que mais admirei nesta visita! Está maravilhosamente executada, os tecidos são lindíssimos e o quilting feito nela é simplesmente genial! Quem me dera já ser capaz de trabalhar assim!

This quilt was the one I admired the most in this visit! It is marvelously executed, the fabrics are gorgeous and the quilting applied is pure genius! I wish I could work like that!
